Austin, Mary

Austin wrote The Man Jesus, a book which encouraged FH in his identification with Christ. When she actually met FH, at a debate at the Arts Club, they had a disagreement about the worth of the novelist David Graham Philips, whom FH championed. FH went on to be ruder to the other speaker, Mr. Wheeler, President of the Poetry Society of America, after Wheeler made a Philistinic complaint about the dubious morality of some poets.
