Bennett, James Gordon

US Publisher and promoter of sporting events, immortalised in the Cockney exclamation "Gordon Bennett" as an expression of "surprise incredulity or exasperation" (NSOED). Referred to by FH gnomically in My Life and Loves thus: "I had good reason to distrust Gordon Bennett, as I may tell later" - but he never did, so his 'reason' remains a mystery.
