This site is wonderful. And this particular ideology.....is too much. I thought all the insane people lived here in Bisbee, Arizona which is known to everyone as 'the largest open air insane asylum' on the planet.
I guess the phenomenon is much more wide spread than we (at least) suspected.

Today an article can be found in the Atlantic Monthly which seems to reference the same patent and even uses the same illustration as you do. It also talks about various experimental efforts to keep a severed dog head alive. From reading the article it seems that the author has never heard of the book but simply found the patent. The article includes a video clip which probably ranks among the very awfullest of media available on the net.
