Poet Laureate. FH had little respect for Austin, whom he considered a social climber without talent. "I must write a certain amount of poetry", said Austin once, alluding to his preferment. "Why?" replied FH, feigning ignorance. "Oh, to keep the wolf from the door". "... You read your poetry to the wolf, eh?" was FH's (for once witty) retort.
