Actor-manager, rival to the great Henry Irving. FH used him in a revenge on Irving and Bram Stoker, who had refused to advertise in the Evening News, calling it a "halfpenny paper". FH persuaded Barrett to make an offer to Ellen Terry, to coax her away from Irving, who was then forced to renew her contract at a higher salary.
