Roth was a Greenwich Village bookseller and sometime pornographer who published The Private Life of Frank Harris, largely plagiarised from My Life and Loves.
Roth was also notorious for having pirated James Joyce's Ulysses. In 1956 he was imprisoned for 'sending obscene material through the mail'.
